Looking for vBulletin OpenID Plugin

I'm looking for a proposal for the following:

How much would you charge to implement a full OpenID plugin? There's a lot of code available to work from, including this:

PHP Library for OpenID:
Welcome to OpenID Enabled!

PhpBB OpenID plugin:
SourceForge.net: OpenID Auth for phpBB

OpenID plugin for mediawiki (in PHP):
Extension:OpenID - MediaWiki

I'd like the plugin to do the following:

1. Add a link to the login are to allow login using OpenID.

2.a. When the OpenID auth link is clicked, it would take you
to an OpenID login screen. Submitting from this page would
take you to your OpenID origin provider (say, AOL), where you
would authenticate.

2.b. Assuming successful OpenID authentication, you would
come to a screen inviting you to 1) choose a local username and
password, or 2) link your OpenID to an existing username or password,
or 3)

3. The user would then be taken to a Thanks for registering page, and
would then be logged in and able to post.

I uploaded some very loose wireframes (copied from what other sites are doing mostly) that you can see here:

Box.net - Free Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Online Storage, Access Documents & Files Anywhere, Backup Data, Send Files

Also: please consider when you give an estimate that we woud be happy to donate the code back to vbulletin.org (if you want to maintain it), as long as we get some attribution as a sponsor.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

growgirl

I would be very interested in sponsoring this too. I would consider a sponsorship only if the code can be given back to the community (via vb.org or other sources).

I am sure a lot of community owners have faced this problem with their own sites. Here is a use case:

You have a fairly large forum (150k+) and you want to develop value-added applications for your users. You want to make it a seamless experience for your users and don't want to put them through the trouble of creating a new id for each service you offer. You want to use vB as a service rather than a platform you develop against. You want to embrace Open Source. You are stuck with vB.

We are a community based website for MBA aspirants in India (PaGaLGuY.com - The Everything of MBA, CAT 2007, GMAT, XAT, CAT 2008, SNAP, IIM). We have a ton of plans for developing VAS for our users to extend and enrich their experience. I keep coming up against this problem everytime we develop a new app. OpenID would go a long way in solving this issue for vB forum owners.

Please keep me in the loop for this.

Cheers!

I would be happy to support the growth and support of OpenID in vB. It is a necessary system that would grow immensely from the support of forum software, if the likes of SMF and phpBB can do then no doubt the powerhouse that is vBulletin can do it.

I'd love to have something like this for vB. Two things that concern me is how it works when an existing user already uses that or a very similar screen name and spam.

What's to stop spammers from obtaining an open ID and abusing our open ID system?

To thwart spam we could create an openID user group or treat open ID users like an awaiting confirmation user, where we let them read content blocked from guests but don't allow them to post until they register for an account.

Re: Looking for vBulletin OpenID Plugin

i have some decent experience with exchange systems like this. It looks like a cool idea and one that may be necessary to implement it appears.

However, I do see the pit fall Dan points out being a problem. Of course the solution is not difficult. It's just things like that which need to be recognized up front and dealt with when coding.

I'm talking out loud. Nice idea. I am downloading the code to see if this lib is viable. I was hoping it was in PECL or PEAR for easy distribution and maintenance for hosts. That can make for a big PITA. Plus, if the project is not active enough, it could branch or even die leaving us lost.

Is this the only OpenID project out there? I have to read about them some more before investing too much.

I already found one reason to sit back and look some more. Google is in the game now too and an API seems to be coming post haste.

Google announces OpenSocial - open API for connecting social networks | B. Mann Consulting

I'd put my eggs in something the big players design and host rather than a startup with personal info.

Hi,

the latest issue of the german open-source magazine T3N contains an article about OpenID. Here is a collection of hyperlinks from the article:all the best,
