Greetings

Hi everyone...
My name is Andrew. I just joined a few minutes ago. I've been managing a VBulletin site since 2004. Well, I use the term 'managing' a little loosely. I was really only doing the odd upgrade until recently when I got a bit more free time. I've gotten into it a bit more so have started looking for like-minded individuals

I just upgraded to VB 3.7 and am cruising my way through the new features. I like the new 'Networking' features but will be keeping an eye on it to ensure that members don't start going into their own little gangs.

The site I run is a health, fitness and bodybuilding forum so the picture albums are going to be great too for before and after pics. My next project is to develop an HTML front page that helps us with SEO. The forum is locked to unregistered visitors so it makes SEO a little difficult. Anyhoo...enough about VB and more about me:

I live in Canberra, Australia with one wife, no kids, three dogs, a car and a mortgage. During the day I'm an Account Manager for an IT Outsourcer and a Web Host/Webmaster when the sun goes down.

I've been Web Hosting and 'Webmastering' since 1996 and since then have earned exactly $0.00 from this pursuit . I daresay there may be many of you that can relate!

As far as other things are concerned, I'm into Rugby League, Formula 1, World of Warcraft and going to the gym.

Pleased to meet you!

A.

Welcome to the site. Any reason you have your forum set to private? What if you just set certain areas to private?

We had a LOT of idiots on the forum late last year - I mean MANY! We did a cleanup in January. We deleted all the idiots and then deleted everyone that hadn't posted in 12 months or more. After doing that we went from approx 9000 users down to 1500. The forum at that point wasn't the close-knit community we wanted so we closed completely to new members for a couple of months and started working on the community spirit. It worked quite well. The postings increased and people seemed more involved. We then did another cleanup, this time deleting people that hadn't posted in three months. Got the membership down to a cozy 900-ish. We then opened up to registrations again but left the whole place private to see how things went. After all that cleanup, I've had only three deleted people email me asking why they can't get on. They were welcome back and reminded that they need to post regularly :-)

You've made me think more about it though and I've raised this with the other admins about opening up some portions to the public.

Anyhoo..that's the history in a nutshell. Sorry to bang on so much!
