Promoting a forum via other forums

I've just started a new forum and was wondering if anyone has tried this technique.

The forum is about Global Positioning Systems, so it'd be a good fit for auto forums.

I was considering asking auto forum owners if they would email their members (for some sort of fee) with details of my forum and a competition I'm running.

As it would not be in direct competition with the auto forum, I wondered if they'd go for it.

Well, I think you need to build some content on it first. All you've got now is a bunch of empty forums.

Thanks... The question wasn't about the content of the forum at the moment.

Any comments on the specific question in the first post appreciated.

Posting links to relevant threads [that are on your forum] in threads is effective.
Being a helpful member and keeping a link to your forum in your signature is good too.

Always check with the forum admin to make sure he won't view you as a spammer though.

I would build some content first. get a 100 or so threads on your site that will invoke discussion. There is no need to get visitors if they are leaving within 10 seconds ;)

and like Get Shorty said, be helpful on related sites, post some links back to tutorials or tips you posted on your site with good anchor text.

It seems that it's not even a forum anymore. I guess it didn't work out for you then.
