in the pagerank calculation, the number of links to your site is a part. It helps to have many... to some point to get a higher pagerank number, and the higher the pagerank, the better you will be in the search results of the search engine (near top)

I'm not sure if you are asking what Backlinks are themselves or why they help you in google and search engines nowadays.


Backlinks are links that are to your site (or a page on your site) from external sites. Now you can do link exchanges, but Google can tell when you do them and thinks its weird when 2 sites both link back and forth to one another. So the type of backlink you want is non-reciprocating ones where people are linking to your site from theirs, but you aren't linking to them.

Basically, Google thinks that a site that is linked to more, is more popular and because of that gives it better Pagerank and ratings.

Thats the "simple" idea of it.

So basically you want to "linkbait" (post stuff that baits people into linking to it I.E. interesting stuff).
