Basic on page optimization

I am planning to convert my phpbb forum to vb and I wanted to know what are the basic on page optimizations I can perform on a fresh install of Vbulletin (not planning to purchase vbseo at the moment).

Also is there a way to redirect my old phpbb urls to the new vb urls, since there are already 3500+ pages in google index and do bring in ok traffic and I would hate to loose that.

Re: Basic on page optimization

I've outlined a few tips here
http://forum.vbulletinsetup.com/f7/v...on-tips-2.html

If you added vbseo and assuming your phpbb url's have numbers in them like viewpost.php?=32542
Without vbseo you can do a blanket 301 redirect for all old url's to point to your home page. Or, you can make a redirect for Every old url.

Can't afford to purchase VBSEO at this moment, the sad thing is, my forum is quite a resource board and there are quite a few incoming links to few threads. Lets see maybe I will do a manual redirect for a few threads that I feel are valuable enough.

Brandon any idea how I do that through .htaccess file and is there a way to redirect the link even if there are few more parameters after the thread url i.e. viewtopic.php?t=755?sid=37cb8e977837dda43d14c9396b 73d10a or viewtopic.php?t=755&start=15

You wouldn't redirect the session id for starters ;)
Here is some info on 301 redirects
How to Redirect a Web Page Using a 301 Redirect

You can try adding this to your htaccess

Code:
redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm
