Competitions and promoting your board

Has anyone had any luck with running competitions on their forums to help increase member signup and activity?

I'm thinking of doing a monthly draw where anyone with over 5 posts is eligible, but I'm worried about people signing up just to spam 5 posts and enter the draw.

Thoughts?

You didn't have any problems with people posting useless crap just to enter? What sort of contest rules did you have?

Thanks

Re: Competitions and promoting your board

When i first started my forum, i ran a monthly referral contest. (I don't run one anymore at this time) The person with the most referrals got either a free text link in the footer or a banner image in the footer for a month. I ran this for about 4 month's and got a lot of signups cause of that.

Of course i had a few members who registered multiple accounts in which i threw them out of the contest and sent them a message about why that was not a good idea. The terms of any contest need to be very clear so there will be no issue's at the end.

If you run a contest, make sure the prize or prize's is worth the effort or it'll not go well.
