Description of every thread in google is the welcome message

Hi folks,

Just noticed this today. When I use the site: operator in google and look at how many of my pages google has in it's index, I noticed that the description of each page is the welcome header message for guests. Not 100% of the pages are like this but there are a LOT that are.

site:Digital Kaos - Dreambox Support Forum from the very Best!

Obviously because this is the first thing that the spider sees when it crawls that particular page. Is there any way I can fix this for future pages that are indexed? Without disabling the guest welcome headers?

Thanks,
Glen

I have set the welcome headers to show only on forum home. In that way you prevent the same text (welcome headers) to appear before your actual content in showthread, forumdisplay, rules etc...

This would help you avoid this issue

What i do, because some sites actually bennefit in terms of registration from the welcome header is use text on the forum home and throw some keywords into your message. Then on the other pages I use the welcome headers as an image to display a similar message.

I've even used roatation welcome header images and those seemed to help improve registration even more, when displaying a different set of information about your forum for each image and just use different visual clues.

Instead of just throwing the $welcomeheaders, I wrapped it with a simple conditional...

Code:
<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT == 'index'">

</if>
That will make your welcome headers appear on index only.

Val.

That is actually an improper use of welcome headers, because majority of your incoming traffic from search engines etc. is to the threads, rather than the homepage/forumhome.

Best option is to use image as welcome header, that way you will get the welcome message at every page and wont have to bother about getting the same message for each page in search engine results.
