DMOZ Directory and Google?

This is a really interesting point that Sage Lewis is making. Makes me believe even more that Google is getting sick of Directory links. I didn't see them not coming up for dmoz now, but I did read it somewhere else a while ago but didn't think much of it. They are #1 now again, but maybe google did something for a bit a month or so ago?

Re: DMOZ Directory and Google?

dmoz comes up for me as the first several results.
dmoz - Google Search
but I agree that directory links aren't as popular as they once where, it's still a good back link IMO

Yeah, but it sure sounded good in a video I guess.

I'm thinking for this guy to be a so called SEO, he has little to no patience for collecting meaningful data. In other words, the info was no more useful than most of the threads on DP about similar occurrences.

Google is constantly in flux. If someone reacted this way about every little nuance of google, rather than having a long term plan and sticking to it knowing your professional experience will pay off, We'd be editing our sites everyday.

I think I've listened to a few of their podcast, some useful info every now and then.

Re: DMOZ Directory and Google?

I already stated in the first post, that it is back up top, but for a week or so it wasn't even listed in Google. I doubt that just the flux of different servers and things would make dmoz completely disappear.

Re: DMOZ Directory and Google?

I don't think being listed in dmoz carries near the weight that it did before. If you think about it, all those sites that pull from DMOZ are going to have the exact same content. I think this is just all duplicate content in google eyes anymore.
I think as long as directories are unique, the back link will help out.

Re: DMOZ Directory and Google?

I guess you missed last year where this happened to many of us and it turned out to be a non event in reality.

I dunno what's to have a pissing match over. The guy went off half cocked cause it sounded cool that DMOZ and the editors over there might be devalued. They weren't though.

I'm a pretty fact based person. I love a good conspiracy at the same time though. But, nothing to see here.
