Re: Google Webmaster Tools

Well heck... I went back to see what Google had to say about my site map and it says...

"Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit."

Now, when I go to "Add a Site Map" there's a drop down that asks me to choose the type of site map I'm going to add. The choices are...

General Web Sitemap
Mobile Sitemap
Code Sitemap
Video Sitemap

I picked General Web Sitemap. Was that correct? Suggestions as to the issue?

Thanks!

Lyte

Re: Google Webmaster Tools

Check if the sitemap is being created properly, because that is the option you need to choose and I had done the same and I didn’t get any errors.

Hmm... hate to say this but how do I check and see if VBSEO is creating it properly? This is what it looks like...

vBSEO sends out a e-mail when the site map is created...or mine did anyway, but it has been a while since I used it...

You can see the results in the CP
It is in vBSEO CP if I remember right lol!

Does a sitemap have to have a owner for Google to recognize it, or does Google automatically begin to use the sitemap when it gets submitted?

In your google webmaster tools as long as your sitemap urls submitted keep growing, chances are good its doing its job,

If you login to your vBulletin AdminCP -> vbSEO -> Sitemap Reports -> Show Reports List

you can also watch it there too.

Re: Google Webmaster Tools

I installed the sitemap and then went to my webmaster account and added it through there. (even though it said it submitted it automatically) I think it will only show up in your account if you add it. If it doesn't show up it doesn't necessarily mean Google isn't getting it (I think)

Re: Google Webmaster Tools

This is the file that you want to be submitting to google.

sitemap_1.xml.gz

So your sitemap would be...

http://www.pc101.com/forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz

You might also need to add the following lines to the .htaccess file in your forum root.

Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*.(xml|txt)(.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
