How do you SEO HTML pages?

I have some html pages that are associated with my forum, but not exactly connected to the forum. How do I SEO these pages so that they receive a good page rank and are searchable by spiders and search indexes? Is meta tags in the header the only thing we can do?

Re: How do you SEO HTML pages?

Just a few things to get you started.

First and foremost ensure unique title tag is present on all pages.

Have a good meta description tag, which clearly explains the content on the page.

Have relevant keyword tags.

Use H1 tags for the main heading and h2 tags for sub headings.

Ensure all images on the page have alt tag correctly describing them, even the header image!

Menu should be consistent and there shouldn’t be any use of javascript in menu.

Minimize javascript and other script usage on the page and the same goes for flash.

Make sure the page is error free.

Thanks Yogesh, that helped alot. Does it matter where the meta tag placement is located? By that I mean should it be as close to the top as possible?

Re: How do you SEO HTML pages?

Something like this would be good:

<head>
<title></title>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<meta name="description" content="" />
<meta name="keywords" content=""/>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="" title="" media="screen,projection" />
</head>
