Members linking to forum

I've been encouraging my members to link to my forum by giving them an award when they do so. Nothing fancy, just a cute little heart icon below their username and in their profile. It seems to be working, but the majority of the users are not web-savvy and are thus linking to the site from their MySpace, freeweb, or other free web page sites. Sure some have their own domains, but for the most part these are not high quality links, as I understand the term. Will this help or hurt in the long run?

It shouldn't hurt unless Google starts thinking that those are paid links. Have you asked your members to use a certain anchor text or are they free to use whichever anchor text they like?

Most are using graphical links with their user ID for referral credit...

In that case you shouldn't worry about it as Google will recognize it as a referral link, though it might also mean that you wont get the full SEO benefit.

Ok, I'd heard that links from free web hosts weren't worth as much as links from real domain names. So this isn't the case?

well.....

I know myspace added a redirect to all outbound links.. This may be what your talking about..
In that case, it isn't a direct link, so it wont pass pr or anything, but it will help with traffic stiff
