A little over a month ago I created a VBulletin Forum called OzChess - Australia's Chess Forum. Since that time, in order to better improve my pagerank I have done the following:
* Installed Google/Yahoo SEO and get regular pings in my email
* Tried, perhaps successfuly perhaps not, to add my H1 and H2 tags
* Filled out the Meta Keyword and Meta Description in the CP Panel
* Removed the Powered by VBulletin Tag
Yet, my Page Rank still seems to be 0. Short of purchasing this VBSEO, is there something further I can do? |
Backlinks are basically "links" to your pages.
For example, say you find a U.S. Chess forum, and ask the admin if they'd like to add you to their links as an Australian Chess Forum and they do, that is a back link. A link from somewhere else back to your page.
Many people do a lot of link directories and things, I haven't really done much of that and think that content (aka linkbait - a page that is potentially interesting and will gather links from other sites easily) is much more important than directory submissions or link exchanges.
If Google sees you have exchanged links with someone they'll weigh your links accordingly, but if they see you've got all these one way links from outside places coming into your site they'll take notice and give it a higher rating.
hope that helps a bit, if it doesn't, ask me more questions and i'll try to explain in better detail
