Using "viral marketing" to get back links!

We all know backlinks help your SEO immensely, and when you get them from related sites it helps even more. With sites like Digg and Stumbleupon out there a lot of bloggers look to these sites for early whispers of information. When they find it, they are just as fast to spread this information using their own medium (ie, their blog, other websites etc...).

The best thing about this is it can be 100% if you've done it right, and I'm about to share my recent experience with you on the subject!

Say for example, you know there is a big up coming release of something coming out. I'll use a video game, since well, I run a video game forum. Make a short speculation about the video game, such as who is going to be on the cover of the game.

Now you probably don't want to make this speculation on your admin account as sometimes the backlash from a admin reporting such a thing could be a lot larger then if some regular member did it. I suggest creating another account, make a few posts then drop the bomb shell. Simply create the post, give it a few minutes/hours to let fellow forum members comment on the post.

Now heres where it gets to be a little bit of work, but its fun. Take your post, start sharing it with the world! Put it up on digg, and stumbleupon, and any other site that lets users share sites. Then you'll want to find a group of willing people who will help spread the word of your digg. After all an article with 2 Diggs won't get as much attention as one with 100 diggs.

I use a service called Piqq.us for this (invitation only) and the great DigitalPoint Forums (freebie section). The people there are always willing to exchange Diggs and Stumbles for free! Get them to start stumbling your site, and digging it up. After a while it will start to gather some steam, bloggers will pick it up here and there, other forum users will read about it and share it with their forums, and before you know it, You'll have links just flowing into your forums/article in no time.

I just did this the last two days with a article that was posted on my site by a user, while there is no way to confirm the information, It was still worth spreading. As of right now the article has over 1400 views, and 6 links coming to it from larger sites such as Sports.Yahoo.com DeadSpin.com and Boards.Giants.com (yes the NFL Giants webpage!).

All those wonderful links coming back from reputable sites, with 0 money spent, and all the traffic they've sent. I went from 80-100 uniques per day, to over 1400 the last 2 days (and today isn't slowing down either).

As you can see, using some tricky viral marketing, can work for you, its easy as 1-2-3, and can really help traffic which will help revenue, and get those nice back links!

Hopefully this article is pretty clear, and can help everyone build their communities faster!

Good points, however such tactics can come back to haunt you. For instance, your site can be banned by Digg and other bookmarking sites for manipulating rankings. Apart from this, spreading rumors might get you traffic, but whether it stays on your site or not would depend on the validity of the news.

Congrats on the success

I would also be careful with digg, I've been banned from digg a few times and this domain is now banned

I have an account now but it's all in the up and up..
How did your ads perform while on digg ?

again, congrats and thanks for sharing

Defeinently not something i'll be doing more then maybe once every couple months for sure.

I recently made some changes in adsense and was making $1 for a few days before this, and the last two days have been between $3-5 with today looking like it'll fall in the same area.

I tried this yesterday on an article to do with the lunar eclipse. When I read your post at 10am, the article I decided to use had 200 views and had been on my site for nearly 6 weeks.

I submitted it to digg, stumble and a facebook profile. I then joined 19 groups on my facebook acount that were weather related. I didn't post the article on these groups I just joined.

23 hours later I now have 3,800+ views on this thread Total Lunar Eclipse 21st Feb 2008 - Midlands Weather Forum - A UK Weather Forum

Your tip works a treat and I will be sure to use it for special threads in the future
