Re: vBulletin Optimisation Tips

Ok, I just did a few of these as best I could. One question, it says to chmod a few folders to 777

I was wondering if we need to set them back after doing the update/fix or just leave them set at 777 ?

leave them at 777

I assume you are talking about moving avatars, sigs, custom pics to a file system ?

Re: vBulletin Optimisation Tips

To expand on this you need to keep the avatars, sigpics, and profile picture folders at 777. Whenever I upgrade vB, I just over write the old files and folders.. By the next day, I get complaints that people cannot change their avatar because the new folders had different permissions. Once chmod those folders back to 0777, it works fine.

An easy was to change mod if via ssh or telnet, From forum root:

Code:
 chmod 0777 customavatars/ customprofilepics/ signaturepics/
*Only works on Linux servers.

I would think that if it works for mysql 4.xx that it would work on 5.xx but I'm not 100% sure on it. Hopefully one of our more experienced members can confirm for you.

Re: vBulletin Optimisation Tips

One line to include in your robots.txt file...

Crawl_Delay: 10

Example:

User-Agent: *
Crawl-Delay: 10
Disallow: /forums/ajax.php
Disallow: /forums/attachment.php
... -- etc. --

Here 10 is the delay in seconds between page requests.

Both "Slurp" (The robot that is indexing for Yahoo and AltaVista) and the Microsoft robots for the MSN sites obey this parameter. Googlebot does not use this "Crawl-Delay" parameter yet, it just ignores it, but it will likely obey it in the next upcoming version.

Since vBulletin sites seem to be popular with search engines and lots of people have more aggresive bots than visitors at their site, it might be wise to slow down the robots by adding this line in your robots.txt file. This way the spiders do not bludgeon your serverload.

Now watch and after the robots visit your site and after some time, monitor your log files to see how many visitors came from search engines.

How to submit site to search engines?
It is free and very easy to submit your website to search engines! It's better to do that submission manually as the search engines ask for verification when submitting the site. Here are 3 popular search engines and the pages where you can add your URL:

Google: Add your URL to Google
Yahoo: Yahoo! Submit Your Site
MSN: Live Search URL Submission

Note: It is up to each of the search engines to include you in their search results. The time for the inclusion also may vary depending on the number of websites in the waiting lists.

If you asking if you still need the robots.txt file if using vbseo ? Yes, you should use robots.txt no matter what

Stock vBulletin Attachments are stored in the Database. Large attachments or frequent viewing of them can cause a strain.

To move them to the File System, create an attachments directory above your public_html (at the same level as it.. /root/username/public_html | root/username/attachments) and CHMod it 777.

By placing it at this level, we prevent anyone from being able to access the attachments directly (ie: not through vBulletin).

Next, go to the AdminCP and expand the Attachments menu.
Click on Attachment Storage Type.
Move your attachments out of the database and into the file system.

Attachment Path: /home/*username*/attachments

5. Move Avatars and Profile Pics to the File System

As with the Attachments above, but the Avatars are on every post, so cause a burden to the server whenever a post is viewed.

To move them to the filesystem, chmod your forums/customavatars and forums/customprofilepics directories to 777.
Go to the AdminCP and expand the Avatars menu.
Click User Picture Storage Type.
Choose to Move Avatars and Profile Pics to the File System.

Avatar Path: /home/*username*/public_html/forums/customavatars

Avatar URL: /forums/customavatars

Profile Pic Path: /home/*username*/public_html/forums/customprofilepics

Profile Pic URL: /forums/customprofilepics
OK, this is clear as mud to me.

I have already nearly 200mb of pics stored in the database, be wise to move this hey?

So, my forum is not in some forum folder but laid out just 1 click below the public_html folder.

Now you are saying level with the public_html folder I create a folder?

I'm a little confused ... how many folders do I create?

Re: vBulletin Optimisation Tips

I use the forumpath.php file from vbadvanced to find the path

I'd just past the code inside the file, but I just formated my HD and don't have it handy.
