Would adding blogs be good for SEO?

I'm pondering offering blogs to my 2,070 member strong (yay!) forum, and was wondering if they help or hurt with SEO. I'm sure some entries will be about the forum topic or at least mention it, but of course some will be about families and other stuff. Those of you who have already added blogs, what do you think?
