Adsense locations on forums

I haven't used adsense in quite some time, but I figured I'd try it out for a while with one of my small, growing forums. I know there are quite a few sites out there with recommendations as to where to put ads, but I figured I'd try it out myself on a vB forum.

I'm going to be doing different placements for the ads for months. Each month I'll change the placement of the ads and then compare and see if there are any noticable differences.

One thing you should know is that I added conditionals that make it so only guests can see the ads. Some people don’t like doing this because it limits the amount of people seeing it, but I personally think that your members are less likely to click an advertisement than a guest. Also, why harass registered members with ads when you can keep it nice and clean for them without them?

My Setup for this month:
LinkUnits Matching my forums colors and scheme in sidebar and under the navbar.

It will be nice to track the changes.

I just switched the ads under the navbar bar last night to a bigger ad

I only show the ads to guest as well. ;)

Yeah, I hope to see some big differences. This month I'm starting out with them there and not very aggressive or too attention catching. Next month I'll try something that contrasts the site a bit.

I'm not sure which will work better, as I know I (and probably others too) have basically become ad-blind. if they look like google ads, or yahoo ads, you just don't even notice them anymore. So that is part of my thinking with keeping it as close to my theme as possible now

I usually have ads between posts where members are more likely to see it. But your experiment will give me and other PPC users an idea of where to put ads. But it really is different for every site.

I'm probably gonna do that as well, but just for guests. I just don't want ads for my members.

Yeah. You do have a good point; although members that want to support your site will click your ads too.

That's a good point; usually there are more guests than members online.

Re: Adsense locations on forums

I ran adsense for everyone (members and unreg'd) for about 6 months on of my boards. I didn't run into any problems with the big G. Now, I have private advertisers so I just run adsense on my archive pages, I get a few clicks here and there.

I think people are getting adsense blind, I know I really have to look for the ads to see them or they have to be in face enough for me to be annoyed by them.

Adsense is a dying breed.. Google keeps lowering the PPC rate, for low traffic sites it's not even worth copy/pasting the code.
