I am certainly no expert on design, and I am not here to criticize.

I would at least suggest finding a Style for the site. Something besides the default design style with a different logo.
I can't design my way out of a wet paper bag, so I understand going with the default style, but there are a lot of Free designs out there that would help spruce up your look a bit, and they are easy to install, with no code edits required. Just a simple upload, and some admincp steps is usually all that is required.
