I have my site hosted with Bluehost.com and they have shut down my site due to it being too active and taking too many resources.

This is good because my site is growing but its REALLY BAD because my site is now completely off line and wont be back online until I can figure out how to move it to another server.

I've got an account with dreamhost.com and also hostgator.com so I'm wanting to move it to either one of them for now.

I've already done a "full site backup" in cpanel on the old site and downloaded the .tar file to my desktop.

I've got absolutley no idea what to do next and am in a bit of a panic. Please someone help.

Well, if you have the account and they both have cpanel just import it through cpanel... then forward the dns to the new server

I've been on the phone with bluehost, dreamhost and hostgator all day.

Hostgator has a site set up service so Hopefully they will be able to do the transfer. I'm still waiting on them to write me back.

I really need to learn all this server/database stuff. Any recommendations on the best place to start learning that stuff for a beginner? I'm tired of not knowing how to do these things.

1 other quick question, who do you use for hosting? Are you on a dedicated or shared or what?

Depending on how active, and how large, you would have to see what best fits your budget. Remember you get what you pay for

was on dedicated server but although i had access to the configuration, it had crap resource limits.

Moved to bravenet, and now have 1.9TB bandwidth limit each month and 90GB storage. And load speeds are good.


Joshbond, add your existing database is just a matter of importing it through PHPMyAdmin. But it also depends on the global size limit of the import to the database, you should ask your host about this, cause even tho you can split up your SQL file into partial points, it can do damage. And usually when you sign up for a host for the first time, they offer their customers with an option of migrating their previous hosting accounts.

I've gone ahead and got a semi dedicated server from hostgator. its $79 a month. The next step up is a fully dedicated at $220 a month.

I'm hoping this semi-dedicated one will work for at least a little while.


They moved my site from the old host to the new host for me so that wasn't a huge issue. They did take forever to do it though and I was very frustrated while waiting for them to do it.

Now I'm just waiting for the NameServers to fully propagate and the site should be back up and running as good as ever!
