Just had to upgrade to VPS

After a few complaints form my host, they've finally forced me to upgrade to a VPS, but thats okay, cause in negotiations i managed to talk them into letting me sign up using my own referral code. So $50 to my hosting account.

But they countered negotiated and its on my old hosting account, and I can't apply it to my current hosting account lol go them right.

But thats okay cause it gave me free 5 months of hosting on their medium shared plan which i'm probably gonna go sell at WHT or DigitalPoint :d and as i setup and secure the VPS i'll be making some useful posts for others to follow shall they ever need a VPS

Re: Just had to upgrade to VPS

That is expensive, you could have gotten at least 128mb extra ram for that price!

I know, i think i could have gotten another 256 actually for this price, but I didn't for some inexplainable reason.

edit, oh i remember, i went to check out PowerVPs website, and i didn't like the changes, so i just stayed where i was.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having your own server? How much will cost to have one setup for your site? I'm thinking about it. Why given away money when you can have your own server? Any thought on this.

Re: Just had to upgrade to VPS

The advantages are you are in complete control of everything. You don't have to worry about some idiot running a rampant script that can slow or bring your server down, you can configure it however you'd like.

BW and Storage can actually be cheaper, the thing that usually costs money with your own server is the Hardware. If you colocate the server (purchase the server, and send it some where to be hosted) It could cost more in the long run, especially if you have a hardware problem, and have to pay a tech to fix it.

Thats not a problem if you live near a colocation facility, but there aren't any near me, and going VPS was my next logical move, and then dedicated which will be roughly $120 a month (already have it picked out ), but at that point my sites revenue should far exceed hosting costs. As it is now, i'll be breaking even.

Re: Just had to upgrade to VPS

lol, So I order this VPS based on my current hosts exceptional customer service and tech support.

Well today, of course everything seems to have imploded at their offices. My sites have been unreachable for most of the days, subdomains aren't working 83% of the time, not just for my domains, but for the hosting company domains as well.

Their tech support, sent my tech question to billing, (which is of course closed on weekends) where it sat for 2 hours till i filled another ticket. And that ticket didn't get resolved before the same person sent it off to billing for some off the wall reason as well. (Mind you these tickets had nothing to do with billing, it was why i couldn't access subdomains/my site)

And I'm still waiting on my activation email for my VPS, but i'm affraid if I sent something like that in, i'd end up in a wiki or something
